Radio23.org/CCR: Radio Playlist 09/22/2010

Our theme today is an imagined soundtrack to the book The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  This crime thriller is set entirely in Sweden. It's a fun book, and we thought we could put together a soundtrack of cold, Arctic Scandinavian music to go along with it.

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO

New Discovery: Frifot's first album.
This isn't really a new CD, but I just discovered it in the used bin of my local record store, Everyday Music. Three great instrumentalists (and vocalists!) from Sweden in their first pairing as the group Frifot: Ale Möller (mandola, flute, hammered dulcimer, harp, shawm, vocal), Per Gudmundson (fiddle, Swedish bagpipes, vocal) and Lena Willemark (vocal, fiddle, flute). This CD is just what I've been looking for in Swedish and Scandinavian folk music: dark, creepy arrangements of traditional ballads and dance tunes, rich with the organic tones of wooden instruments and drawn from life in the Swedish countryside. Highly recommended!

WORLD MUSIC 2.0

Music from our new Global Village. As power of creation and distribution passes into the hands of the world's people, we start to hear new sounds that remix and rethink the Western hegemony of hip-hop, rock, and punk.

New DiscoveryCloudy October
This Portland MC/DJ has a love and respect for the craft of hip-hop that's all too rare. Unlike most DJs, the beats come second to the song. He puts more emphasis on the samples, the sounds, the structure of the song than he does on the kicks and slaps of an 808. It's a welcome breath of fresh air, but not a surprise for NW hip-hop, which has recently shown itself to be at the forefront of a new wave of DJs and MCs reworking hip-hop away from the club bangers and towards a more elegant, graceful and complex vision. About time!

CELTIC NORTH

Tunes and songs from the many Celtic lands. Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, Galicia, Quebec, Cape Breton, etc.

New Discovery: As Faiscas
This group of young musicians could only be born in the hostelling culture of Europe. Made up of two Americans, a Uruguayan, a Spanish Galician and an Irish lass, the ethnic makeup of the group reflects the international community of Celtic musicians. And they play music from each of these regions, though they focus on Galician music as their main muse. Diana Lourido Vilar, the lead singer, has an amazing voice and a powerful grasp of Galician song, and with Molly Carr and Sinead Connolly joining her on harmonies (and some gorgeous songs from Irish singer Sinead), these three young women are leading a powerhouse new Celtic ensemble.

NEW AFRICA

New sounds and beats from Africa. A post-colonial soundscape entwining the music of the West with a myriad of regional traditions.

New Discovery: Madlib's Beat Konducta in Africa. Critically-acclaimed hip-hop beat master Madlib has been making tracks so dense and convoluted that most rappers can barely keep up. In 2010, he set himself the task of releasing one mixtape a month as part of the Madlib Medicine Show. With "Beat Konducta in Africa", he taps into his vast stash of obscure and rare African vinyl from the 60s and 70s. It's a strange journey he takes us on, remixing everything from highlife to field recordings, and stitching it together with bizarrely outdated narrations about Africa's history and snippets of roughed-up barbershop bickering. It's also one of the most intriguing examples of cross-cultural inspiration we've heard in years.
