Kathy Kallick Band: Foxhounds
Loyalty to legacy is important to Kathy Kallick, as it would be to any master bluegrass performer, but it’s key to consider Kallick’s own legacy, not only through her work with the Kathy Kallick Band, which has been one of the premiere bluegrass bands in the nation for years, but also through her lifetime of work as a pioneering woman of bluegrass. As a founding member of the seminal band Good Ol’ Persons, Kallick was one of the first professional women in bluegrass, and over the years has become a knowledgeable mentor to many other artists. Now with her 20th album, Kathy is performing at the height of her craft. Foxhounds, features fiery fiddling, crackling mandolin fills, powerful vocal harmonies, and story-filled original songs. In that way, Foxhounds is the kerosene that keeps the bluegrass fire burning, as well as a hand that passes that flame to future generations of talent.
On Foxhounds, Kallick is joined by Annie Staninec (fiddle), Tom Bekeny (mandolin), Greg Booth (dobro and banjo), and Cary Black (bass). Everyone in the band sings, and all had a hand in the sparkling arrangements. You can hear Kallick’s intergenerational influences too, especially in the way she showcases IBMA Momentum Award Winner fiddler Annie Staninec, who infuses the tradition with youthful playfulness. The album includes seven Kathy Kallick originals, from soulful roots (“So Danged Lonesome”) to evocative folk (“Snowflakes,” “Longest Day Of the Year”), driving old time (“I’m Not Your Honey-Baby Now”), and bittersweet rumination (“In Texas”). And in Kathy’s true devotion to the tradition of bluegrass, the band covers tunes by greats like Bill Monroe, Mac Martin, and Flatt & Scruggs, but also ventures further afield to a rollicking cover of Richard Thompson’s “Tear-Stained Letter.”
Kathy Kallick has won a Grammy and two IBMA Awards, received a Lifetime Membership from the California Bluegrass Association, appeared on three high-profile Rounder collections of bluegrass songs by women, written and recorded award-winning music for children and families, and toured the world. Each of the Kathy Kallick Band’s releases has spent a year in the upper echelon of the national radio charts, and Foxhounds promises to be no exception. Foxhounds dazzles as it straddles the line between tradition and innovation, showcasing the musicianship and songwriting that has earned Kallick respect for decades.
